Workshop Overview:
Implementing the English Learning area of the Australian Curriculum.

The English Learning area is one of the first curriculum areas to be developed at national level. In this workshop participants will have the opportunity to explore the overall structure of the English curriculum. This will also involve looking closer at the key areas or strands and content of the curriculum across year levels and an investigation of the standard associated with each year level. It will also outline how the General Capabilities and Cross Curricula Perspectives can be integrated into the English learning area.

It will also give teachers an opportunity to look at methods of planning at whole school and class level and instructional strategies to use in the classroom.

Aims of the workshop
Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the Australian Curriculum
  • Investigate the aims and rationale of the English Learning area
  • Become familiar with the structure and key componenets of the curriculum
  • Unpack year levels and ascertain differences/similarities in content
  • Become familiar with the online structure of the curriculum
  • Examine standards at each year level
  • Look at school planning
  • Work with strategies from the curriculum
  • Gain awareness of the resources available to support the implementation of the Australian Curriculum in the English Learning area
  • Examine the general capabilities and how they link to the English Learning area
