I would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest WAPPA members:

Sam Cousins, Allendale PS
Virgina Everall, North Morley PS
Dyan Sutherland-Mundy, Somerly PS
Sarah Thomason, Kelmscott PS

We look forward to providing you with the Support, Advocacy, Leadership Development and Connection for which WAPPA is renowned. Likewise, we welcome your voice to the ongoing discussion around primary education and school leadership, through the numerous avenues provided to our members.

It is pleasing to see our membership growing steadily since the start of the year.  35 new members have joined WAPPA this year across both Aspirant and Ordinary membership categories.

WAPPA Advocacy

Last week I travelled to Canberra for three days, to take part in national meetings with AGPPA and APPA National Councils.  AGPPA represents government primary school leaders across the country, whilst APPA represents primary school leaders from all three sectors. Together these national associations represent 5300 schools, with over 1.6 million primary students.

At these meetings we worked collaboratively to refine our strategic plans and to develop specific actions for working with the incoming federal government. We have since learned that Jason Clare has been announced as the new Federal Minister for Education, with WA's own Ann Aly appointed to the Outer Ministry, responsible for Early Childhood Education. We look forward to working with the incoming Ministers, to advocate for increases to SRS funding for primary schools.

The AGPPA National Council released a press release following the election result, which can be viewed here.

Other meetings I have recently attended, to advocate for members' needs include:

  • System Alliance Meeting with associations, unions and Corporate Executive.
  • System Alliance Meeting - specific to Reporting to Parents requirements
  • Various WAPPA member school visits
  • WAPPA State Assembly

At State Assembly, our Chapter Chairs and Board Members came together online to work through a number of issues and hear from a range of speakers. The main agenda items were:

  • WAPPA Strategic Plan
  • Chapter Issues
  • Principal Selection Process
  • DG's address
  • SCSA Update on new Australian Curriculum
  • WAPPA Partner Updates

Your Chapter Chairs will disseminate information to you from State Assembly in the coming weeks.

Changes to Members' Fee Structure

Last year, the WAPPA Board ratified a decision to create a more equitable fee structure, which would see members now pay a percentage of their gross income, regardless of FTE or pay scale (0.4% for Aspirant Members and 0.8% for Ordinary Members).  Previously, fees were set for members to pay the equivalent of 1.0 FTE at the highest scale within their level. eg 3.4, 4.4, 5.4 and 6.4.  This change provides a far more equitable pay structure and members who are less than 1.0 FTE or not at the highest scale in their level will notice a reduction to fees.

The new structure is set to be implemented in the pay period of June 9 and we suspect there may be some teething issues with the change over,  though we have been liaising closely with the Department to ensure a smooth transition. We would urge you to contact us if you notice anything out of the ordinary in your June 9 pay.

Conference Update

Tickets are selling fast for the 2022 OSH Club WAPPA Conference and Gala Dinner.  Three day and single day registrations are available by following the link on our website.

Time is also quickly running out, for members to submit an EOI to run a concurrent session on the final day of the conference.

We will be sharing with you, videos from our speakers over the next few weeks. They will each be sharing what they will be presenting at Conference. The first one you can see below.

Professional Learning Opportunities

We have recently launched our International School Leadership certificate program with 20 very enthusiastic leaders and are thrilled that over 50% of participants are joining us from a regional location. Keep an eye out for the 2023 EOI that will be available later this year.

Make sure you grab a friend and enrol for The Act of Leadership event with Dan Haesler, on 4 & 5 August. This is one of the best leadership opportunities for the year and includes a copy of Dan’s best-selling book. Make sure you register today for this 2-day online event.

On June 7 we will be running our very popular Making the Leap to Deputy Principal workshop; there is still time to join, so contact us ASAP.

Over the coming weeks I will be leading PL sessions at School Development Days, Network meetings and Aspirant groups. Please give me a call to discuss how we can support the learning for your school or network, as we have many flexible options available.

WAPPA and Fleet Network have been industry partners for 3 years.

With EOFY looming and cost of living pressures increasing, you may be looking for new ways to save. Fleet Network offer salary packaging, novated leases and refinancing options which could save you thousands on your car.

Already have a car loan?
Refinance your current car to a novated lease with Fleet Network. Why? Your finance is covered in one simple deduction from your pay, as well as all the running costs of your vehicle. That’s right - registration, fuel, finance, tyres, insurance, and servicing are all covered.

Looking to buy a new car?
Purchasing via a novated lease, rather than a car loan, can save you thousands. If you’re on an $80k salary and are interested in a $40k vehicle, you can save up to $8,700 with a novated lease through Fleet Network.

Example pricing only. Subject to change and personal circumstances.

Struggling to keep up with rising fuel costs?
Save up to 40% on fuel on a novated lease with Fleet Network. A Novated Lease allows you to use your pre-tax income to pay for fuel whilst minimising the GST you pay, effectively saving up to 40% at the bowser.

Special offer for WAPPA members!
Contact the Fleet Network team to today talk through your options. If you decide a novated lease is right for you before EOFY, you’ll receive a free Apple Watch upon vehicle delivery! Simply request an obligation-free quote and mention the WAPPA Apple Watch special offer to redeem.
