Kaya
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest WAPPA members:
- Olivia Matthews, West Busselton PS
- Holly Francke, Boyup Brook DHS
- Andrew Upfold, Atwell PS
- Jen McCarthy, Dumbleyung PS
- Heidi Wahanui, Charthouse PS
It is pleasing to see that our recent efforts to ensure we are representing the needs of all members, is resulting in greater membership in regional areas. 40 new members have joined WAPPA this year, with a 50% ratio of new metropolitan and regional members. As we enter Semester Two, I have been able to confirm that I am attending a large number of Network Meetings and I look forward to visiting networks to talk about the work of WAPPA, but also to hear directly from school leaders about what else can be done in the areas of Support and Advocacy.
We welcome the voice of our new members to the ongoing discussion around primary education and school leadership, through the numerous avenues provided to our members.
WAPPA Board Representation - Deputy Principal
At last week's Board Meeting, the WAPPA Board endorsed the motion to co-opt a Deputy Principal onto the Board. WAPPA has adopted this position for many years, however in recent years, our Deputy Principal Board members have moved into permanent principal positions. Having looked through recent election nominees, all Deputy Principals who have nominated for the WAPPA Board are also now substantive principals. If you are currently a substantive Deputy Principal and Ordinary WAPPA Member who is interested in this role, please click the link here and feel free to contact Marni at the Business Centre to discuss this further.
WAPPA Support - Principal Handover File
We have recently fielded a number of calls from members who are transitioning between schools, seeking a Principal Handover File to support their move, whether that be incoming or outgoing. WAPPA has previously developed a document, which has now been uploaded to the WAPPA website. Please follow the link here to download this file from the secure Member's Area.
Manager, Member Services - vacancy
Are you looking for something different in the leadership space? WAPPA is looking to fill the role of Manager, Member Services. This role could be ideal for someone near the end of their career, who is keen to support school leaders and WAPPA's activities. It may also be an ideal short term move, for anyone looking to take LWOP for a period of time from the Department, but wanting to stay involved in schools and school leadership. If this role sounds exciting to you, please follow the link hereand give us a call.
WAPPA Advocacy
This week saw the release of the Auditor General's Report into 'Delivering School Psychology Services'. Having made a submission on behalf of members and based predominantly on members' experiences, WAPPA welcomes the recommendations of the report; specifically in relation to supplying school psychologists to where they are needed most and ensuring there is greater collaboration between external agencies. WAPPA will continue to advocate for greater access to support services in primary schools, as all the evidence indicates early intervention, from qualified para-professionals, will have the greatest impact on addressing academic, social and emotional concerns in students. The full report can be found here.
Your Executive Board members have recently attended the following meetings to advocate for members' needs:
- Principal Selection Process Update (changes to processes to be confirmed)
- Principal Performance Review PL Update
- Meeting with various Directors of Education to discuss Level 3 Principal support
- SID Standing Meeting
- Review into WA Education Awards
- Leadership Institute PL Update
- Review into policies and processes regarding research in WA schools
WA Education & SPAWA Awards
The Department have recently announced a different format for the 2022 Education Awards. There are three categories this year;
- Excellence in School Leadership
- Excellence in Teaching and Learning (Primary)
- Excellence in Teaching and Learning (Secondary)
WAPPA would encourage all members to consider these categories in promoting the innovative leadership and teaching and learning that is taking place in our schools, with all the information available here. I have recently provided feedback to the Department's review into the WA Education Awards, so we will await the findings of that review, to see what they look like in future years.
The School Psychologists' Association of WA is also running their annual awards, with categories for early years and experienced school psychologists. If you have an outstanding school psychologist working in your school, please follow this link to nominate them.
Auspire - Inspiring Australians Breakfast
Last week Auspire hosted a breakfast with the WA winners of the 2022 Australian of the Year Awards. WAPPA was lucky enough to be allocated a table at this breakfast and we gifted our seats to a number of our Deputy Principal and Principal members.
WAPPA is very keen to foster this relationship with Auspire and we currently have the 2022 WA Young Australian of the Year, Kendall Whyte, presenting at our 2022 conference.
2022 OSHClub WAPPA Conference Update
Are you attending the WAPPA conference for the first time? You won't have to worry about what to expect or not knowing anyone, as you are invited to come along and join the WAPPA Board at the First Timers Lounge for a morning welcome, meet and greet. We will make sure your conference is full of connection and collegiality as well as great professional learning.
Have you spoken to your Chapter Chair as yet about securing reserved table allocations for conference sessions? That's right; you can book a table or two for members of your Chapter to sit together and watch a specific speaker or two during conference. If you are interested, please contact Carolyn at the Business Centre and let her know your requirements (which session and for how many people you are reserving seating).
Very soon, WAPPA will be releasing information to delegates who have registered and are attending the Gala Dinner. This will allow you the opportunity to organise your tables and request your seating well ahead of time. Jump the queue and take off the pressure of doing this at conference. Our wonderful and hardworking Business Centre staff will thank you for this.
WAPPA Conference Keynote Speaker and Panel Host, Adam Voigt.
