NEW MEMBERS
I would like to welcome the following members, who have joined WAPPA in the last fortnight:
- Robyn Day, Parkwood PS
- Emidio Boto, Wiluna RCS
- Wendy Conti, Phoenix PS
- Donna Jarvinen, Ongerup PS
- Stacy Woodman, Mt Tarcoola PS
- Katie Rose, Lake Gwelup PS
We continue to have a growing presence in our regional schools and last week I was able to meet a large number of these school leaders at the Newly Appointed Principal Induction. We thank you for supporting WAPPA, but more importantly, for trusting us to support your professional leadership needs.
COLLEGIAL GROUPS & CHAPTER CHAIRS
Last week we held a very successful online meeting for a group of 25 members, who are keen to start a new Collegial Group. This initiative was in response to the growing requests from members, to be placed into a group, which can often be a timely and challenging task.
Last week we wrote to 12 Chapters, who were in need of a new Chapter Chair. The response was astounding, with over 45 emails received, from members who were keen to take on this role. This response speaks wonders about the members being engaged, responsive and wanting to 'give back' to their colleagues and the Association. In some instances, sole nominees were appointed and in others, an election has been run, in order to appoint a new Chapter Chair.
Advocacy & Support
GROH SURVEY
Thank you to the 96 regional school principals who recently completed a GROH survey. The results of this survey are currently being analysed and reviewed in collaboration with the other three associations. We will very shortly release this data to our members, to ensure transparency in the process we are currently engaging in, in relation to GROH advocacy.
FUNDING
As WAPPA continues to advocate for greater funding for primary schools to address a range of needs, we are often reminded about the total allocation of money in school reserve accounts. Notwithstanding the flaws in this argument, we do want to remind members of the need to ensure that you are spending a minimum 94% of your school budget each year and that you have plans in place for reserve account funds. If you'd like support with any aspect of budgeting and managing reserves, please contact us and we can put you in touch with a colleague or Member Support Officer.
LEVEL 3 HANDBOOK
In years gone by, WAPPA has developed a Handbook for Level 3 Principals, to support them in their first year of appointment. This document is in need of a review and refresh and we are seeking any interested Level 3 members to provide input into the latest edition. Experience in the role is not a prerequisite to contributing, as we believe the voice of experienced Level 3s is as important as those who are new to the role. If you are interested please email to discuss further.
NATIONAL PUBLIC EDUCATION WELLBEING SUMMIT
This week, members of the WAPPA Board are in South Australia, joining representatives from all government associations and departments of education from around Australia, to take part in the NPEWS. The summit will provide a unique opportunity to work collaboratively, to consider how we build the capacity of public education systems to better support the wellbeing of our children. We will be sure to distribute the information and findings that come from this summit, in due course.
WAPPA, WASSEA and DoE representatives working collaboratively at a national level to tackle Student Wellbeing.
In the News
WAPPA President Niel Smith spoke to Channel 7 News this week about the current expectations of schools and the implications for staffing. He spoke of student complexity, lack of funding for early intervention support and impacts of GROH.
