WAPPA MEMBER ANNUAL STATISTICS
As we approach the end of the year, it is always an opportune time to reflect on the changing demographics within the association.  A recent analysis of 2023 data showed the following figures:

  • New Members= 102
  • Retired Members = 73
  • Active Principals = 482
  • Active Deputy/Associate Principals = 417
  • Aspirant Members = 88
  • Alumni Members = 109
  • Life Members = 29
These figures show an increasing WAPPA membership across both the calendar year and the financial year as reported in the 2022/23 Annual Report. WAPPA now has at least one member in 89% of all primary schools across the state and 82% of all schools with primary students. The strength of our membership allows us to confidently advocate for your needs. We have great connections across the state and power in numbers, in which we ground our stories, case studies and examples of best practice. Thank you to all who have continued to support WAPPA this year and have allowed us to support you and your professional needs.

WAPPA MEMBER SURVEY
Members are urged to complete the biennial survey that was sent out last week. The results from this survey will help us establish new initiatives and more targeted support for our members, in 2024. There are already a number of positive trends coming through the data, along with some areas for improvement, so we highly  encourage you to add your voice.

Advocacy & Support

WORKLOAD REDUCTION
WAPPA was pleased to hear Minister Tony Buti's announcement of several initiatives designed to reduce the workload of school staff. Over the last 12 months, WAPPA has been working with the Department, proactively advocating for change in a range of areas which will be improved by these initiatives. We have provided consultation into and helped shape:
  • Realignment of some financial processes, delegations and reports, to ensure consistency across most schools, regardless of IPS status.
  • Staffing changes for filling fixed term positions in metropolitan schools, to ensure school leaders could be certain of their staffing and not have to worry over the Christmas holiday period.
  • Extension of Connect & Respect Resources. Yesterday's Ed-email contained links to "Out of Office" templates that have been designed by the Department, for staff to use after hours and on holiday periods. WAPPA has been working closely with the Parent Liaison Office and these templates are expected to be expanded upon in the new year to include support materials for school leaders who may face inappropriate online/social media commentary, and to support school leaders in managing complaints that may consist of unreasonable time frames, expectations or demands.
  • Complex Behaviour Support Coordinators.  Earlier this year, through our position paper,  Supporting Students with Complex Needs, WAPPA called for greater resources for schools and increased access to specialist staff . We are keen to see an expansion of these resources to ensure they are accessible to all schools, regardless of context or location. We also look forward to expediting the trial of a Needs-Based Funding Model that is currently being explored by the Department.
  • Exclusion Processes. This week, Association stakeholders were briefed on the work being undertaken to reduce workload involved with exclusion processes. Please note, this is not to say the Department is making it easier to exclude students. Changes will include support resources available to guide school leaders and documents that make clear what to include and what not to include upon submission, eliminating the need to include information that is already accessible centrally and so on.
WAPPA acknowledges there is still much work to be done in relation to school leader workload, health and well-being and supporting students with complex needs, and we welcome any opportunity to work with the Department to help shape these initiatives. Likewise, we welcome the voice of WAPPA members to share your experiences, ideas and initiatives with us to ensure that we provide a collective voice and work with other organisations to bring about the changes that result in the greatest impact.

UPDATE ON AUTO EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS (AED)
Last week's Ed-email shared a link to updated information on Ikon, in reference to AEDs. Associations have been seeking additional information in relation to the CEO Instruction issued 15 November. As a result of this feedback and consultation, there are now a number of exceptions to the requirement to locate the AED on the outside wall of the main administration building. Exceptions include:
  • If you already have an AED that is accessible to the community during school hours, you don’t need to install another one.
  • If you have garrison fences/locked gates making the AED unavailable to the public if installed on the outside wall, you can install it inside.
  • If you believe it will be vandalised, you can install the AED inside.
  • If you already have an AED on a fence or letterbox near the school entry (that is available to the community), you don’t need to install another one.
Wherever it is, you still need to register it with St John WA.
(thanks to WASSEA for this update)
